At its core, LDN 1235 is a dense cloud of interstellar dust and cold molecular gas, so thick it obscures the light from countless background stars, creating the shark's ominous dark form. Subtle blue reflection nebulae (vdB 149 and vdB 150) glow faintly around its "head," illuminated by embedded young stars, while reddish-brown hues trace the intricate filaments of dust spanning about 15 light-years.
